Follow the line
Julian Aster, very old, looks into the camera from his dark art-deco study.

Everything I built, Aster Works and the Underlay itself, goes to the one who finds my Keystone.

The video will, released the night he died to every screen on Earth.

I · The Will

Everything he built goes to the one who finds his Keystone.

Julian Aster designed impossible buildings. Then he vanished for thirty years to build the Underlay: a hidden layer of light, memory and geometry laid over the real world. The night he died, his will went out to everyone.

“Everything I built, Aster Works and the Underlay itself, goes to the one who finds my Keystone. I hid it where I hid myself.”

Julian Aster, the Architect

II · The Underlay

Raise the Lens. The world was drawn with a compass.

Your phone becomes the Lens, a brass-and-glass instrument of Aster's design. Through it, the streets you know show what he hid: lines of light, his sigils on old walls, and doors where there were none.

A city at dusk. Through the Lens, gold lines of light join its tower, its domes and its port.

Move the Lens over the city

The Lens: two overlapping round lenses in an engraved brass frame with an ebony handle.

The Lens

Two circles of smoked glass in one brass frame: the vesica piscis, the first door. New filters come with the story: light, sound, time, heat and memory.

  • Sightings

The Architect asks for the world: “Show me a circle that holds water.” Your camera answers, and a memory opens. Every sighting can be solved at least two ways, wherever you live.

  • Nodes

Where his lines cross, real places around the planet open special rooms and season events. Always optional on the story path.

  • Memory rooms

Step through a door into a handcrafted 3D room built from his life: twenty to forty-five minutes of story, mechanism and light.

III · The Language

He wrote it in the oldest language there is.

Circle, line and ratio. The Underlay is built from sacred geometry, told as art, mathematics and history: Euclid and Pythagoras, Plato's solids, Islamic girih, Gothic rose windows. Every lock is a real construction, and every puzzle is fair.

Draw it with a compass

Two circles, each through the other's centre. The first door, and the shape of the Lens.

The five keys

Each act's key is a solid. Assemble them, unfold them, turn them to the light: their shadows hide symbols. The fifth, the dodecahedron, Plato's shape of the cosmos, is the shape of the Keystone.

Seven kinds of puzzle

  1. Compass and straightedge

Draw real constructions with the Lens to open his locks.

  2. Proportion

Find φ in a room's architecture, then in your own street.

  3. The solids

Assemble, unfold and rotate them. Their shadows speak.

  4. Cymatics

Tune the brass plate until the sand draws his sigil.

  5. Light

Turn the rose window's panes until the pattern is whole.

  6. Tiling

Complete girih and Penrose floors, one tile at a time.

  7. Labyrinths

Trace them in AR on a real floor, or walk them in a room.

IV · The Rooms

A life, told in rooms.

Every memory is a handcrafted 3D room. Turn it, take its mechanisms apart, follow its light. Each one hides part of his story, a clue to the next key, and secrets for those who look closer.

V · The Race

One Keystone. The whole world.

Every season opens a new wing of the Underlay and a global race: three keys, three gates, one Keystone. The first to open each gate is named forever in the Hall, and everyone else can still finish.

The Adjusters

You are not the only one hunting. OBELISK's AI agents occupy nodes and rooms, set traps and leave false clues. Push them out with puzzle duels, alone or with your guild.

  • Clues, keys and advantages are never sold.
  • Race puzzles are made for each player, so answers can't be shared.
  • Prizes and official rules will be announced before Season I begins.
